Microsoft substitutes diesel powered generators with batteries in Swedish data center

Batteries are now replacing diesel generators, and Microsoft has made the switch official. Microsoft has replaced a data center’s diesel-powered backup with a large scale battery energy storage system (BESS) issued by Saft, a TotalEnergies subsidiary. The Spanish blackout: how would the ESS solve the major outage?

In late April 2025 a massive grid failure plunged much of Spain (and neighboring Portugal) into darkness.  Flights and transit halted, and hospitals had to rely on backup generators to keep critical equipment running. This event exposed how a loss of power can cascade across a region.
